Amnesty International

Amnesty International is a non governmental organisation focusing on human rights. It was founded in the UK in 1961 and has 63 sections worldwide. Amnesty was founded to support prisoners of conscience, people who have been imprisoned or violently prevented from expressing their opinions. Their logo, which consists of a candle surrounded by barbed wire, was chosen by its founder Peter Benson in reference to the Chinese proverb: ‘It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness’.
