Wi-Fi is the most common protocol for connecting to the internet via radio signals, and this symbol indicates that Wi-Fi is activated and the device is connected to a wireless network. The term ‘Wi-Fi’ was coined as a pun on ‘Hi-Fi’ to indicate ‘fidelity’, from the Latin for ‘faithful’ or ‘trustworthy’. Although Wi-Fi is intended to allow secure direct communication, the image of the propagation of waves in the form of concentric circles calls to mind the history of broadcasting, and Wi-Fi networks are extremely vulnerable to anyone within range of their signal.
